The original, true rose, designed by nature and grown in the wild. They usually have dainty, single (5 petalled) flowers, ornate thorns and decorative rose hips. They are usually quite vigorous and have a once seasonal bloom. Particularly hardy and make excellent protective shrubs.

Ancestral varieties include: R. gallica and R. alba (Europe), R. damascena (Middle East), R rugosa, R. chinensis (Asia), R. moschata (Himalayas), R. multiflora (Japan).
