FAQ Buying & Growing Roses

Why should I choose roses from a specialist nursery over a general retailer? As sixth-generation growers, we provide a level of expertise and plant health that mass-market retailers cannot match. We specialise in propagating our own stock, including heritage, rare, and wild varieties that are often unavailable elsewhere. Because we are a certified David Austin grower, you are guaranteed authentic, high-performance plants grown to the highest horticultural standards.

What is the best way to choose a rose for my specific garden space?
Selecting the right rose depends on your garden's layout and climate:

  • For Hedges & Small Spaces: Floribundas provide dense, repeat-blooming clusters, while Rugosas create hardy, fragrant hedges that produce decorative rose hips.
  • For Vases & Centrepieces: Hybrid Teas are the classic choice, offering large, high-pointed flowers on long stems ideal for cutting.
  • For Large Structures: Climbers are perfect for cascading from pergolas and pillars, or training along fences to create colourful gardenscapes.
  • For Naturalistic Areas: Wild Roses and Shrub Roses thrive in flowering meadows or cottage-style gardens, offering dainty flowers and ornate thorns.

What are the benefits of ordering Bare Root roses? Buying bare root is the traditional method for securing our specialist varieties. Because these roses are dormant and shipped without soil during the winter months (mid-year), they have a lighter shipping weight and are easier to handle. Planting them in winter allows the rose to establish its root system in your local soil well before the spring flush, leading to a stronger, more resilient plant.

Why are Heritage and Wild roses significant for Australian gardens? Heritage roses are prized for being highly fragrant and multi-petalled, providing a historic, bushy centrepiece that modern hybrids rarely replicate. Wild roses offer the original, naturalistic rose form and are often exceptionally hardy, making them suitable for flowering meadows or darker areas of the garden. We are dedicated to preserving these varieties, including our work restoring the resilient Alister Clark roses, which were bred specifically for Australian conditions.

We breed and grow our varieties with a focus on natural vigour and disease resistance from the start. To maintain this health in your garden, ensure your roses are planted in well-drained soil with adequate air circulation. While Rugosas are excellent for harsh areas and low maintenance, all roses benefit from consistent watering at the base and a seasonal prune to encourage new, floriferous growth.
